In the light of the seasonal outlook as produced by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and other centres, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has published advisory guidelines for use by farmers across the country in preparation for the upcoming winter season. The guidelines, produced in consultation with the National Agro-meteorological Committee (NAC), forecast that rainfall is anticipated to be above normal during late autumn while both maximum and minimum temperatures are anticipated to also be below normal. The guidelines go on to suggest strategies for Rain-fed crop production, Irrigation farming, Domestic and home garden water use, Stock farming, Grazing, Veld fires and Severe thunderstorms/flash floods. Farmers are also advised to continually conserve resources, and in particular, water and grazing.
